UEFA European Qualifiers

From the San Siro and Stade de France, to the continent's more obscure football outposts, one of Matt's favourite freelance roles has been directing, co-shot, scripting and edit-producing match features on UEFA's 'European Qualifiers' for World Cups, Euros, and the Nations League. Its something he's been tasked with by IMG in international windows since 2018.

"I'm in my element capturing the drama and excitement of the Beautiful Game in creative and dynamic ways. Being mobile and using a small hand-held camera like an FX3, allows me to film supporters' passion up-close, and find angles of the match action far-removed from the typical game coverage for broadcast."

These items - often requiring a fast turnaround edit back in the UK at Stockley Park the morning after the game - feature on UEFA's 'Matchweek' highlights show, which UEFA's global rightsholders have access to.

The best shot captured by Matt in this time? "Harry Kane's goal against Armenia in 2025 was memorable. I was lucky enough to catch it beautifully from behind some silhouetted England supporters on Wembley's Level One. But nothing tops the time I made Christiano Ronaldo seemingly 'disappear', using the slanted, mirrored windows inside Estádio da Luz - beautifully appropriate for the story I'd tell in edit, as Portugal's defeat to Serbia had left Ronaldo's dream of a fifth World Cup appearance at Qatar 2022 in the balance!"

See below for examples of the body of work Matt's put together, including those featuring the shots mentioned above: 'Ronaldo's Vanishing Act' and 'The Tuchel Era begins at Wembley'.
